Theatre Camp 2020

Tuscaloosa Children's Theatre and Theatre Tuscaloosa are once again partnering to offer Theatre Camp 2020! This year's camp will run Mon.-Fri. June 15-26, 2020, from 8am-noon, in the Sandra Hall Ray Fine Arts Center at Shelton State Community College. Bring a snack!  Registration for Theatre Camp is currently on hold.

Group A: K-1st

Act Your Age 8:15-9:05: An introductory acting class for young actors. Campers learn how to use their voices, bodies, and imaginations to create different characters. (Teacher: Brent Jones)

Music of the Theatre 9:10-10:00: Calling all singers! Campers will learn proper singing techniques such as breathing and voice placement as they learn songs from popular musicals. (Teacher: Merry Livingston)

Dance! 10:15-11:05: Calling all dancers! Campers are taught proper dance techniques as they learn choreography for several songs from popular musicals. During the second week, campers will learn to sing one of their pieces during Music of the Theatre, creating one complete musical number! (Teacher: Stephen Tyler Davis)

Imagination Express 11:10-12:00: Kids love to use their imaginations! This class will allow the campers to channel their imaginations through various improvisation games and exercises. (Teacher: Colton Crowe)

Let’s Dance 8:15-9:05: Calling all dancers! Campers are taught proper dance techniques as they learn choreography for several songs from popular musicals. (Teacher: Stephen Tyler Davis)

Act! 10:15-11:05: An intermediate acting class for young actors. Campers use their voices, bodies, and imaginations to create different characters, as well as learn skills surrounding character development. (Teacher: Brent Jones)

Act! 9:10-10:00:  Many agree that the most difficult aspect of theatre is auditioning. In this class, students will learn the skills necessary to execute a successful audition and land a role! (Teacher: Brent Jones)

Improv 10:15-11:00: Doing live theatre means thinking on your feet when things don’t go as expected.  Through improvisation games and exercises, campers will learn to become scene savers by thinking outside the lines. (Teacher: Colton Crowe)

Dance! 11:10-12:00: Calling all dancers! Campers are taught proper dance techniques as they learn choreography for several songs from popular musicals. (Teacher: Stephen Tyler Davis)

Production 8:05-12:00:  Campers will present a one act play on Friday, June 28 at the Camp Showcase. Campers will participate in auditions, rehearsals, character development, as well as costume and set construction in preparation for the play throughout the two weeks. (Teacher: Sara-Margaret Cates)

Drew is camp coordinator & a lifelong resident of Tuscaloosa. She received an MFA in theatre from The University of Alabama and a JD from The University of Alabama School of Law. Drew has served as Artistic Coordinator for TCT since 2009. A member of the T. Earle Johnson All Star Cast, she has appeared in more than 30 plays and musicals with Theatre Tuscaloosa, and she was recently recognized with the Best Actress Award at the 2018 Southeastern Theatre Conference Community Theatre Festival. She is married to Don Baker and is the proud mother of Clifton, Amanda, and Will Baker, whom she loves almost as much as her many, MANY cats.

Colton holds a degree from The University of Montevallo and is currently working on his master’s at Troy University. He has been performing for his most of his life where he has also directed, choreographed, and stage managed a number of shows with multiple theatre organizations in Tuscaloosa such as Theatre Tuscaloosa and Tuscaloosa Children’s Theatre.

Stephen Tyler Davis

Stephen holds an MFA in Theatre from Sarah Lawrence College and a BA in Theatre/Creative Writing from The University of Alabama. He is the book writer and lyricist for original musicals Huckleberry Haywood (NYMF 2011) and Monkey Boogers (NYC 2014). He is also the author of original plays Shooting Bridezilla, Sailing, and Bad Kiss. He appeared in two national tours of A Christmas Carol for TheatreWorks USA. He has served as the Artistic Director for CitySalt Theatricals and Blue Plate Broadway children's theatre summer camp in Huntsville. Stephen has also been a guest Artist for The University of Alabama, Alabama State Thespian Festival, and Alabama Theatre Conference.

has been performing and directing in theatre since 1986.  He has taught theatre to children from kindergarten through high school, at Central Elementary, Bryant High and where he currently teaches, Hillcrest High.  Brent served as Artistic Director for TCT from 2001-2005 and has directed many productions.

Merry Livingston

studied music at the University of Alabama and has been working with children as an educator for thirty years. Today, she serves as a frequent pianist and musical director for Tuscaloosa Children's Theatre, directs children's choir at both school and church, and is a librarian at Westwood Elementary.

Sara-Margaret Cates

Sara-Margaret  holds degrees from the University of Montevallo and The University of Alabama. She toured professionally with Missoula Children’s Theatre and has done countless shows with TCT and Theatre Tuscaloosa. She also directs for the SENSE Theatre Program with UA and was named the 2019 Druid Arts Award Theatre Educator. She is the Director of Performing Arts at Tuscaloosa Academy where she teaches music and theatre to students in pre-K through 12th grade.
